Native American Initiative
Honoring the Land
The purpose of the SSU Native American Initiative (NAI) is to improve the outreach efforts and retention and graduation rates for all Native American students at SSU. By providing responsive services and celebrating Native cultures through events and programming, we create a space for belonging, community, and success. The NAI will be implemented and managed by staff from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in conjunction with the existing co-curricular programming through SSU’s Native American Studies (NAMS) Department. A Native Student Mentor will provide student mentoring, academic support, and community engagement on and off campus.
Our objectives include:
- Support Academic Success and Retention: Utilizing local tribal wisdom and guidance from the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria (FIGR) as well as intentional and bold approaches shaped by student needs, community scholarship, and the need for strategic outreach to local Native American students. In addition, we will continue celebrating our Native/Indigenous student graduates with our annual Native American/Indigenous Cultural Graduation.
- Cultivating Cultural Awareness: Promoting programs and events that educate SSU students about Native American cultures, traditions, and histories to foster greater understanding and appreciation. We will continue providing programs and events that support Native American Heritage Month, Native Fest, Indigenous People’s Day, and Basketry Workshops.
- Creating Support Networks: Continue supporting initiatives that provide resources and support for Native American students at SSU, including the Beading Group, Native Book Club, and the Native and Indigenous Student Club.
- Fostering Community Engagement: Supporting initiatives that encourage college students to engage with local Native American communities through service-learning projects, partnerships with tribal organizations, and cultural exchange programs.
- Celebrating Indigenous Heritage: Organizing initiatives that celebrate Native American heritage like our annual Native Fest Celebration where communities and allies connect and bring awareness to resources and educational opportunities through food, music, song, and dance.
The SSU Native American Initiative (NAI) aims to have a positive impact on Native American efforts in several ways. The purpose of the NAI is to improve retention and graduation rates among Native American students. By providing tailored support services such as student mentoring, academic support, and identity development, the NAI helps students overcome challenges they may face in their academic journey. This support can increase their likelihood of persisting through their degree programs and ultimately graduating.
Celebrating Native cultures through events and programming, the NAI creates a sense of belonging and community for Native American students. These events provide opportunities for students to connect with others who share their cultural background and to celebrate their heritage. This sense of community can be particularly important for Native American students who may feel isolated or marginalized on campus. By actively reaching out to Native American students, the NAI ensures that they are aware of the resources and support available to them. Many Native American students may not be fully aware of the services offered by the university or may feel disconnected from the campus community.
Through targeted outreach efforts, the NAI can bridge this gap and make students feel more welcome and included. Finally, by working in conjunction with SSU's Native American Studies Department, the NAI ensures that its efforts are aligned with the academic goals of the university. This integration allows students to not only access support services but also to engage with the academic study of Native American cultures and histories, enriching their educational experience.
