Women's History Month

Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations the following year.

In 1980, a consortium of women’s groups and historians—led by the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women's History Alliance)—successfully lobbied for national recognition. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980 as National Women’s History Week.

This page highlights the events being hosted and presented for this year's Women's History Month at Sonoma State University. This year's theme is the "Intersectionality of Womanhood". Cáel Keegan “On the Necessity of Bad Trans Objects"

Professor Keegan explores why “good” transgender representation might be an impediment to trans liberation, and why "bad" transgender media objects might preserve a radical trans imaginary. Keegan is an Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Concordia University. He is author of Lana and Lilly Wachowski: Sensing Transgender and serves as Special Editor for Arts and Culture at Transgender Studies Quarterly. Women of Color Collective

The Women of Color Collective (WOCC) is a weekly community building and discussion space co-facilitated by a WOC clinician from CAPS and a WOC staff from The HUB. Share and be inspired by our collective stories as WOC SSU students. Connect, support, empower and share resources and kinship as we navigate the joys and challenges of our beautiful, intersectional experiences. This group is for all Cis and Trans women, as well as non-binary SSU students who are comfortable in a space that centers on the experiences of women. Ms. Bob Davis, “Have you Met Louise?” and “In Their Own Words: Transgender Autobiography from Casa Susana”

Ms. Bob Davis (she/her/hers), the founder and director of the Louise Lawrence Transgender Archive in Vallejo, CA, will introduce us to the archive as a springboard into an exploration of how trans guests of Casa Susanna, the 1960s and 1970s cross-dressing resort. Drawn from each woman’s writing, the talk provides early examples of transgender people examining their lives with candor only possible when writing for a transgender audience. Umoja Queens Social: Goal Setting

The Goal Setting Social aims to empower our members by providing them with tools and strategies for setting and achieving personal and academic goals. Porsche Veu "The Poetic Activist" will facilitate the discussion.

Umoja Queens group was inspired by a group of students who identify as Black Women who expressed an interest in engaging with and being mentored by professional black Women who were a part of the Seawolf community. We strive to support, encourage, and empower Black Women as they explore their personal values, beliefs, and ideas during their matriculation at SSU. Sara Beth Brooks “A History of the Asexual Movement”
